Symptoms of

Dyslexia in Adults

ADHD

Physical symptoms

For adults, dyslexia often affects tasks that involve written language. Reading may take longer than expected and require extra concentration. Writing or typing can be slow, and spelling mistakes are frequent, even for familiar words.

Some adults notice difficulty copying information accurately, keeping track of forms or lists, or following written instructions. These challenges can make work or study exhausting and sometimes overwhelming.

Emotional & Mental

Dyslexia can affect self-confidence and emotional wellbeing. Many adults feel anxious or frustrated when reading, writing, or managing complex information. It is common to experience self-doubt or compare oneself unfavourably to peers. Some adults may have developed coping strategies that hide difficulties, but this can lead to mental fatigue and stress.

Recognizing dyslexia can provide relief, helping you understand that these struggles are not personal shortcomings and enabling you to develop practical strategies to work with your strengths.

When to seek an evaluation

Consider an assessment if reading, spelling, or written tasks are consistently challenging, affect your work or studies, or impact daily life. Even if you have adapted to these difficulties, understanding dyslexia can provide clarity and help you access tools and strategies to make tasks more manageable.

Assessment can also identify co-occurring challenges, such as ADHD or anxiety, which may affect learning and focus.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects reading, spelling, and sometimes writing. It does not reflect intelligence. Many adults with dyslexia are highly capable, creative, and talented, but they may have struggled with reading and writing tasks throughout their lives.

Dyslexia often runs in families and can sometimes go undiagnosed until adulthood. Recognizing dyslexia as an adult can provide clarity about past challenges and help develop strategies to manage work, study, and daily life more effectively.

Common forms of Dyslexia

Dyslexia can appear in different forms. Phonological dyslexia makes it hard to link letters to sounds, which can make reading unfamiliar words difficult. Surface dyslexia affects recognising whole words by sight, leading to slow or hesitant reading. Some adults have mixed dyslexia, showing characteristics of both phonological and surface types.

Visual dyslexia is less common and may cause letters or words to appear to move or blur. Understanding the type of dyslexia can guide practical strategies for reading, writing, and daily organization.

What are the root causes of Dyslexia?

Dyslexia tends to run in families and is influenced by how the brain processes language. Differences in phonological processing, memory, and visual-verbal integration can all contribute. Environmental factors during childhood, such as the language-rich environment a child grows up in, may affect how challenges appear, but dyslexia is not caused by poor teaching or effort.

Adults often recognize patterns that have persisted since childhood, which helps make sense of lifelong learning difficulties and informs strategies for managing tasks effectively.

Evaluation framework

Complementary consultation

Your assessment begins with a consultation with your dedicated care navigator, where you can share your experiences openly.

The clinician will discuss your reading, writing, and learning history and explore how challenges show up in work, study, and daily life. This consultation helps tailor the full evaluation to your individual needs.

Clinical Assessment

Following the initial consultation, a senior clinician conducts a detailed evaluation. This includes reviewing educational and developmental history, assessing reading and writing skills, and examining cognitive processes such as working memory, processing speed, and phonological awareness.

Age, environment, and co-occurring conditions like ADHD or anxiety are also considered. The goal is a clear understanding of your profile and learning style.

Diagnostic Report and further recommendations

After the assessment, you will receive a full clinical report. This includes your results, clinician observations, and how your profile aligns with recognised dyslexia criteria. The report also contains practical recommendations for work, study, and daily routines. Your clinician will go through the findings with you, answer questions, and help you apply strategies to make tasks easier and less stressful.

The focus is on recognizing your strengths, managing challenges, and giving you the tools to succeed confidently.
