What does

talking therapy help with?

THERAPY

Anxiety

Anxiety in children can show up in many ways, from constant worry and restlessness to difficulty sleeping or concentrating at school. Children may avoid certain situations, struggle with changes in routine, or become easily upset by everyday challenges. While occasional worry is normal, persistent anxiety can affect a child’s confidence, friendships, and ability to enjoy daily life.

Talk therapy helps children understand their feelings, learn practical coping strategies, and build resilience so they can face challenges with greater calm and confidence.

ADHD

Children with ADHD often struggle to stay focused, sit still, or control impulses. They might forget instructions, leave tasks unfinished, or have trouble keeping up with schoolwork and routines. These challenges can be frustrating for both the child and their family.

Through talk therapy and practical strategies, children can learn to manage their attention, handle impulses better, and build confidence in everyday life.

Depression

Depression in children can show up as sadness, irritability, withdrawal, or a loss of interest in things they usually enjoy. They may have trouble sleeping, eating, or keeping up with school and friendships. Children often find it hard to put their feelings into words.

Talk therapy gives them a safe place to express what they’re going through, understand their emotions, and learn ways to cope, helping them feel more supported, hopeful, and connected to the world around them.

What is talk therapy?

Talk therapy helps children understand and process their thoughts and feelings. It provides tools to cope with stress, anxiety, low mood, or difficulties at school or home. Children learn to identify their emotions, understand why they feel a certain way, and develop strategies to respond more effectively.

Therapy also supports social skills, problem-solving, and confidence, helping children navigate challenges with a greater sense of control.

Common types of talk therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This modality helps children see how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected. By learning practical strategies, children can manage anxiety, stress, or low mood and develop positive coping habits.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: Known as DBT, focuses on emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills. It is particularly helpful for children who experience intense emotions, frustration, or difficulty managing impulses.

What can I expect for my child's first session?

In your child’s first talk therapy session, you will meet with a senior child therapist, either in person or remotely. The session is designed to help your child feel comfortable while giving the therapist a clear understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and daily challenges.

Parents are encouraged to share their observations and concerns, which helps the therapist tailor the approach. The therapist will outline how the sessions will work, what your child can expect, and practical strategies you can use at home to support their progress.

Symptoms of mental health

concerns in Children & Adolescents

Physical symptoms of mental health problems

Mental health challenges can affect children physically as well as emotionally. You might notice changes in sleep patterns, such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or shifts in appetite.

Some children experience frequent headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained aches and pains. Physical restlessness, fidgeting, or a general lack of energy can also be signs that a child is struggling with their mental wellbeing.

Emotional & mental symptoms

Children facing mental health difficulties often experience strong or fluctuating emotions. They may feel anxious, sad, or irritable more than usual, withdraw from friends or activities they normally enjoy, or show frustration and anger more easily.

Trouble concentrating, racing thoughts, or persistent worries are also common. These symptoms can make school, friendships, and daily life feel much more challenging for a child.

When to seek help

Consider seeking support if these patterns are ongoing, interfere with your child’s daily life, or cause distress. Early support can help children build coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen confidence.

You do not need to wait for a crisis - recognizing and addressing mental health concerns early can make a significant difference to your child’s wellbeing and development.
