AUTISM
Physical symptoms
Autism in adults can affect physical responses and sensory processing. Many adults have heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, textures, lights, or touch. Sleep difficulties, coordination challenges, or unusual responses to pain or temperature are common. Some adults retain repetitive movements or self-soothing behaviors learned in childhood, which help manage stress or sensory overload.
Emotional & Mental
Emotionally, adults with autism often experience feelings very intensely. Changes in routine or unpredictable situations can cause significant stress. Social interactions may be exhausting, as reading expressions, tone of voice, and unwritten rules requires constant effort.
Anxiety and depression are common, especially when individuals feel misunderstood or isolated. Many adults also have exceptional focus, creativity, and expertise in their areas of interest, showing remarkable strengths alongside their challenges.
When to seek an evaluation
Consider an evaluation if lifelong patterns are affecting daily life, work, or relationships. Signs may include chronic exhaustion from masking, frequent social anxiety, difficulty maintaining relationships, or repeated feelings of being “different” or misunderstood.
An evaluation can provide clarity, validate your experience, and give you practical strategies for work, relationships, and daily life. Understanding your neurotype can be transformative, helping with self-acceptance, navigating social situations, and building on strengths.
What is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, process sensory information, and navigate social interactions. It is a lifelong neurological difference, though many adults are not diagnosed until later in life. Some adults have learned to mask their traits, often working hard to “fit in” socially or professionally.
Adults with autism often have intense interests in specific topics, prefer predictable routines, and may process sensory input differently than neurotypical people. These differences can affect relationships, work, education, and daily life. With understanding and the right support, adults with autism can thrive and lead fulfilling lives.
Common forms of Autism
Autistic Disorder: Adults may have significant challenges with communication and social interaction, often having needed support in childhood and adolescence. They may have focused interests and find social situations difficult, sometimes experiencing anxiety in group or work environments.
Asperger’s Syndrome: Adults with Asperger’s often have average or above-average intelligence and may have developed language on schedule. They can struggle with subtle social cues, like reading facial expressions, understanding sarcasm, or interpreting unwritten social rules. Many excel in their areas of interest but may need strategies to manage social or professional interactions.
What are the root causes of Autism?
Autism is a neurological condition present from childhood, though it may show up differently over time. Research shows that genetics are the main factor - if someone in the family is autistic, siblings are more likely to be autistic too. There isn’t a single gene responsible; instead, it results from complex interactions among multiple genes.
Certain environmental factors during pregnancy may also contribute, such as older parental age, pregnancy complications, or prenatal infections. What’s important to know is that autism is not caused by vaccines, parenting, or upbringing.

Evaluation framework
Complementary consultation
Your autism assessment begins with a comprehensive consultation, which can be conducted in person, online, or over the phone. This is a chance to openly discuss your experiences, challenges, and questions. The evaluation focuses on how you communicate, process sensory information, and engage in social interactions. We also explore how you respond to changes in routine and how you engage with your interests and passions.
For many our adult clients, participating in the assessment from a familiar or comfortable environment helps reduce stress and allows for more natural responses, making the evaluation more accurate and meaningful.
Clinical Assessment
If initial screening suggests autism, we move on to a detailed clinical assessment. This involves reviewing your medical and family history, early development, social and communication experiences, sensory preferences, and daily routines. Using DSM-5 criteria and tools such as ADOS-2 and ADR-I, your senior clinician evaluates behaviors and patterns that may not have been noticed before, building a full picture of your strengths, challenges, and needs.
Autism presents differently in every adult, influenced by personality, environment, and your life experiences. Many recognize traits in themselves that their family may also notice. Our goal is to provide clarity and understanding, helping you make sense of experiences that may have felt confusing or frustrating, while following recognized clinical guidelines to ensure an accurate and thorough assessment.
Diagnostic Report and further recommendations
After the assessment, you will also receive a full clinical report, outlining the assessment results, your clinician’s observations, and how your child’s profile aligns with DSM-5 criteria. This report includes practical recommendations tailored to your child’s needs at home, in school, and in social settings. Your clinician will also walk you the findings and explain whether your child meets the criteria for autism. For many families, this brings relief and a clearer understanding of their child’s experiences.
We approach autism as a neurological difference, not a condition requiring treatment. Our focus shifts to identifying practical adjustments that can improve daily functioning and quality of life. whether that’s sensory adjustments, communication supports, or simple changes in routines. We also highlight your child’s strengths and help you build on them, giving them the skills and confidence to navigate learning environments and daily life more comfortably.
